Online and walk-up sales schedule for asparagus this week!

May 11, 2022 Lise Holdorf

This photo is unrelated to scheduling but I wanted to share anyway: Lise and Melissa on our two Farmall 140 tractors. Lise is using a disk to cover up our new asparagus planting and Melissa is using our Buddingh basket weeder to cultivate the first beets and carrots of the season!

This week we will be open Friday 2pm-6pm and Saturday 11am-3pm for walk-up self-serve asparagus sales at the farm stand (we will close early if we have sold out for the day). Pre-ordering is also available both days for tulips, daffodils, mushrooms, seedlings, and asparagus. This may be the last of the tulips and daffodils for the season! Both online and walk-up sales have a limit of 2 bunches of asparagus per customer this week.

Next week we will be open for walk-up self-serve asparagus sales our regular hours Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm and Saturday 9am-3pm (we will close early if we have sold out for the day). We continue to offer pre-ordering for Tuesday and Friday 2pm-6pm pick-ups for asparagus as well as mushrooms and seedlings.

If you have any questions regarding your order emailing is the best way to contact us. Please email Melissa and shopkeeper@barrettsmillfarm.com with any order issues or to reschedule a forgotten order. May is planting month so it can be hard for us to get to the phone but we will see your email when we are processing orders!

Ordering will open today, Wednesday May 11th at noon for pick-up Friday May 13th 2pm - 4pm and 4pm - 6pm and Saturday May 14th from 11am-1pm. Ordering for Friday pick-ups will close at 6am on Friday and Saturday ordering will close at 6am Saturday.

To order visit: https://openfoodnetwork.net/barrett-s-mill-farm/shop#/shop

  • Asparagus: Limit 2 bunches per customer please!

  • Mushrooms from Fat Moon: Farmer’s Mix, 8 oz bags. Certified organic, grown in Chelmsford, MA.

  • Tulips: Most bunches available are Menton (rose pink with apricot-pink edges, single blooming type) or Blue Spectacle (deep purple, double blooming with tall stems). These are the last tulip varieties for the season!

  • Daffodils - Our last fancy tulip varieties are now blooming!

  • Herb seedlings: Basil and parsley as well as a few oregano and sage (more thyme and sage will be ready in a couple of weeks). All suitable for container or garden planting.

May updates: Asparagus harvest this week and asparagus planting for the future!

May 9, 2022 Lise Holdorf

Laying out asparagus crowns in trenches for our new asparagus patch!

Last week we planted a new patch of asparagus, our second big asparagus planting since we started farming here! While asparagus is a perennial, it does eventually decrease in productivity, and we have found that the total annual harvests from the oldest patch on the farm (planted before we arrived) have tapered off significantly in the past couple of years. We won’t get a harvest out of the new planting this this year, and next year we will only have a limited harvest next year of 7-10 days (it takes about 3 years for new asparagus patches to reach full productivity), so this is a longer term investment in the property! Fortunately, this week we are starting to see an uptick in the daily harvest from our current two asparagus fields, our planting from 2016 as well as the patch we believe was planted in 2009 by Patrick McGrath, so we are hoping to have the farm stand open for self-serve walk-up sales by the end of this week or early next week. In the meantime, we will be taking online pre-orders. Ordering will open today, Monday May 9th at noon (closing Tuesday at 6am) for pick-up Tuesday May 10th 2pm - 4pm and 4pm - 6pm. We’ll have asparagus bunches, mushrooms, herb and tomato seedlings, tulips and daffodils available.

To order visit: https://openfoodnetwork.net/barrett-s-mill-farm/shop#/shop

Available for pre-orders (starting at Noon Monday May 10th) for pick-up Tuesday May 10th:

  • Asparagus: Limit 2 bunches per customer please!

  • Mushrooms from Fat Moon: Farmer’s Mix, 8 oz bags. Certified organic, grown in Chelmsford, MA. This is separate from the Mushroom CSA!

  • Tulips: Varieties include Menton (rose pink with apricot-pink edges, single blooming type) , Avignon (iridescent red and orange flushed with raspberry-pink and shaded orange towards the edge. Single blooming type), and Blue Spectacle (deep purple, double blooming with tall stems).

  • Daffodils: a few bunches for tomorrow, but more will be available at the end of the week!

  • Herb seedlings: Sage, Parsley, Thyme, Oregano, Basil. All suitable for container or garden planting.

  • Tomato seedlings: Chefs Choice (orange slicer) and Striped German (a favorite heirloom tomato, yellow with pink streaks). Keep indoors or covered until the chance of frost has passed.

Spring Mushroom CSA Week 3: It is week 3 of our 10-week spring Mushroom CSA from Fat Moon Farm! Each 1lb bag of mushrooms this week is an oyster mix including a couple of the following: blue oyster, king trumpet, yellow oyster, and black pearl. Mushroom CSA pick up is Tuesday 11am-6pm. If members order additional items from the online store then their entire pick-up will be ready at the time selected for online pick-up on Tuesday (2pm-4pm or 4pm-6pm). Any uncollected orders will be put away at 6pm on Tuesday evening and put out again Wednesday morning at 7am. Please email Melissa if you would like to arrange a different pick up day or time.

Happy May! Tulips, daffodils, and herb seedlings for sale

May 2, 2022 Lise Holdorf

Despite the wind Sarah and Anna were all smiles during potato planting last week!

May is in many ways the most important month on the farm - it is the time when most crops are planted and when we get everything set up for the season. The pressure we feel this month is a mix of stress and excitement - if we get behind or have something go wrong in May then we feel the consequences for the rest of the season, but on the other hand seeing the first seeded crops germinating in the field never gets old! Another highlight of early May is that we reach the height of our tulip harvest (just in time for Mother’s Day! See below for details). We couldn’t talk about May on the farm without providing an asparagus update of course! The asparagus is starting to come up so we will likely have our first asparagus for online-pre-ordering by next week! Growth tends to be slower for the first week but if we get some consistent warm weather then by May 16th we should have enough to open for walk up self serve sales!

There are tulips, daffodils and herb seedlings available for pre-ordering today for pick-up tomorrow from 2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm! Mushroom CSA members, if you would like to order additional items we will combine your order with your mushroom CSA and put it out at your selected time (2pm is the earliest we can have orders ready). Online ordering will open today, Monday May 2nd at noon for pick up Tuesday May 3rd from 2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm (ordering will close at 7am Tuesday). Pick-ups will again be on the porch of our farm stand at 449 Barretts Mill Rd. Concord, MA.

We also have lots of special tulip varieties that will be ready just in time for Mother’s Day! For Mother’s Day weekend tulip orders we will will be opening ordering on Wednesday May 4th at Noon (orders will close at 7am Friday) for pick-up Friday 2pm-4pm, Friday 4pm-6pm or Saturday 11am-1pm. We will send out an email reminder before that ordering begins. In addition to tulips we will be offering herb seedlings, daffodils, and mushrooms from Fat Moon Farm.
