Greens and mushrooms for sale for Friday pick-up!

April 11, 2023 Lise Holdorf

Carmella, Siohban and Sarah admiring the strawberry plants after removing their winter cover.

The crew is all smiles in the sunny warm weather this week - we hope the strawberry plants will be happy about it too! In addition to uncovering strawberries (removing their winter mulch) this week we are also seeding lettuce, tomatoes and flowers in the greenhouse as well as seeding more peas, carrots, beets and spinach in the fields. We will also be harvesting of course!

This week produce will be available via online pre-orders for on-farm pick-up on Friday April 14th from 2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm! We are not yet open for walk-up sales. Online ordering opens today, Tuesday April 11th, at noon and will remain open until Friday April 14th at 8am. Pick-ups will be on the porch of our farm stand at 449 Barretts Mill Rd. Concord, MA. In addition to greens grown in our high tunnels, we also have shiitake mushrooms from Fat Moon Farm for sale this week! If we sell out of an item it will disappear from the store, however check back Thursday as we expect to be able to add additional inventory as the week goes on. We may even be able to add some new items by the end of the week including radishes and daffodils if this warm weather helps them mature by Friday! If you place two separate orders this week we will combine them for pick-up. If you need to communicate a change in your pick-up plans, email is a better way to reach us than phone calls. You can conact Melissa at melissa@barrettsmillfarm.com.

Available for pre-order:

  • Arugula -1/2 pound bags.

  • Kalebration and spinach mix - 1/2 pound bags of baby sized kale mixed with spinach. Great for salads and light cooking.

  • Spinach - 1/2 pound bags.

  • Shiitake Mushrooms from Fat Moon Farm - 1 pound bags. Fat Moon Farm is in Chelmsford, MA and their mushrooms are certified organic. Check out their website here for how to clean and store your mushrooms as well as recipe ideas!

  • Double B Honey - From hives on the property. Not certified organic.

  • Maybe added to the store Thursday: Radishes and pea shoots grown in our high tunnels, as well as the first daffodils of the season! We also likely be able to add to the greens inventory at this time.

To order visit: https://openfoodnetwork.net/barrett-s-mill-farm/shop#/shop

Directions:

  • Orders are open to everyone! You do not need to be a member to purchase.

  • You do not need to create an account to place an order.

  • Be sure to choose your pick-up time (there is a red drop-down menu in the upper right-hand of the screen). If you don’t choose a time, you won’t be able to see the items in the shop.

  • EBT card users: We are now a HIP vendor! Please email melissa@barrettsmillfarm.com before ordering to arrange a specific pick-up time for using your card as pick-ups are otherwise self-serve. Later in the season when the farm store is staffed this won’t be necessary.

Farm updates: This season and beyond!

February 28, 2023 Lise Holdorf

Many of you have seen the Request for Proposals (RFP) in the Concord Bridge last week for the lease of this property beginning in March of 2024, which has prompted some people to ask if we are still in business. We are! This public RFP process is a requirement of the Town of Concord every 10 years. We have now been here 9 years, so the time has come to re-apply. We are submitting a proposal and very much hope to be awarded the next lease on the property. Each lease is 5 years with the option to renew for another 5 years before the RFP process begins again. Our current lease continues until March of 2024 so this coming season is secure and we have already begun seeding in both the greenhouse and high tunnels to get ready!

After a couple of months without much growth on the farm it is nice to be taking care of plants again! In the greenhouse we have leeks, fennel, herbs and flowers started for field planting later this spring. We also have spinach growing in high tunnels for early season harvest, and it may be ready as early as April! Kale mix, arugula and radishes will be seeded in another high tunnel in just a few days and we will be seeding additional starts in the greenhouse by the end of the week, including stock flowers, parsley and onions. In the office, sign-ups continue for all of our memberships including the CSA, Barrett’s Bucks, PYO Flower CSA and Spring Mushroom CSA. We are also working on writing a grant for the installation of a new well, as well as finishing ordering supplies for the season such as fertilizer, irrigation equipment, and more.

Spring Mushroom CSA!

February 15, 2023 Lise Holdorf

We are excited to be partnering again this year with Fat Moon Farm in Westford, MA to offer a Spring Mushroom CSA for pick-up at our farm stand! The Spring Mushroom CSA will be 8 weeks, from May 9th until the week of June 27th, and the price is $145. Sign-ups are available here: https://www.barrettsmillfarm.com/online-store/spring-mushroom-csa-from-fat-moon.

Each week the CSA includes one pound of Fat Moon's fresh, organic mushrooms. Over the course of the season, expect to get a taste of varieties like Shiitake, Chestnut, Lion's Mane, Pioppino, various Oyster mushrooms, and more! We will include information about what varieties are in your mushroom CSA each week in our farm newsletter. For more information (and photos) of each of each mushroom variety visit What We Grow on Fat Moon’s website.

For the first 3 weeks of the Spring Mushroom CSA, pick-ups will be set out at our self-serve farm stand on Tuesdays from 11am-6pm (May 9th, May 16th and May 23rd). For the remaining 5 weeks (starting May 30th) your mushrooms may be picked up any time during open farm stand hours: Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm and Saturday 9am-3pm. Throughout the Spring Mushroom CSA we will be receiving our delivery on Monday afternoons and they will be kept in our cooler until pick-up, so while the mushrooms do hold well when refrigerated, we recommend Tuesday or Wednesday pick-up for the longest shelf life.

We are particularly looking forward to spring mushrooms because they go so well with our other early season crops available in May, including greens (which we are planting this week in our high tunnel!) and asparagus! If you’d like to learn more about how to store and cook mushrooms to make the most of them check out How To Clean and Store and Recipe Ideas on Fat Moon’s website.

2023 Memberships Now Available!

January 13, 2023 Lise Holdorf

We are now accepting new CSA memberships for 2023! We have also opened 2023 Barrett’s Bucks, Mushroom CSA, and PYO Flower CSA memberships for the upcoming season. We hope you will join us!

We have a lot to be excited about in 2023, including an all-star returning crew, a fine-tuned crop plan built from our past 9 years of experience on this land, and plans to keep more acreage fallow in order to improve our soil health in the years to come. We are maintaining our classic farmer optimism that this year the rain will fall when and where we need it, while also preparing ourselves for the possibility (or likelihood?) that it won’t. Some crop highlights for 2023 include an adjustment in strawberry planting practices and timing to improve yields, more seedless watermelon, and the planting of new heat-tolerant varieties of arugula and Salanova lettuce mix in an effort to push the availability of these two most-requested crops even deeper into the height of summer.

If you were a 2022 CSA member and would like to renew for 2023, please email Melissa for the renewal website link. All other memberships (including Barrett’s Bucks, PYO Flower CSA, and Mushroom CSA, and new Vegetable CSA memberships) may be purchased here:
