Farm Store, Online sales and Mushroom CSA this week

After a much needed soaking rain on Saturday and some warmer temperatures following last week’s hard frost, our asparagus patches are rebounding a little. However, we likely won’t see quite as heavy harvests as we did before the freeze. This is in part because our yields tend to taper off as we get closer to June, but also because we stopped harvesting our newest patch a week ago. This new patch was planted last year, and can only be harvested for a short time during it’s second season in order to allow the crowns to better establish themselves. Next year we will be able to harvest that new patch for longer, and in the next couple of years we will be transitioning our oldest patch into annual vegetable production.

In spite of losing almost an entire day to covering vulnerable crops ahead of last Wednesday night’s freeze, we are very proud to be on track with our planting and weeding so far. This week is another heavy planting week, so we are hoping to keep the momentum going!

Spring Mushroom CSA

It is the third week of the Spring Mushroom CSA from Fat Moon Farm! Orders will be set out for self serve pick-up Tuesday 11am-6pm. Please email melissa@barrettsmillfarm.com with any questions.

Carmella carries a giant roll of row cover out of the strawberries on Thursday. Our double covering appears to have done it’s job protecting the tender blossoms from the freezing temps!

Farm Store Update for Friday and Saturday

Freezing temperatures on Wednesday night damaged most of our asparagus that would have been ready for harvest today so we will have a very limited supply at the self-serve farm store. We hope to have more asparagus tomorrow (Saturday) when new, undamaged spears emerge. The good news is that we have begun to harvest spinach from the field and will have it for sale today! We also have green garlic, Fat Moon mushrooms, and our very Bridal Pink snapdragons from our high tunnel! We also have many plants available including herbs, sweet peppers, tomatoes (heirloom, slicers, cherry, and grape). Our self-serve farm stand is open to all, payment options are cash (exact change), check, or Barrett’s Bucks. If you would like to pay with EBT, please email Melissa to arrange a time so that a crew member can meet you at the farm stand.

Frosty asparagus was still frozen Thursday morning. Unlike cold hardy crops it was not harvestable once thawed.

Walk-up and Online sales this week

Things have been humming along smoothly so far this spring (as smoothly as things ever go with farming - there are always a few curveballs!). With a core group of farmers who all have at least 2 seasons here under their belts, we are feeling like a well-oiled machine. We’ve also got some new college students who will be rounding out the crew over the next 2 weeks - just in time for weeds and harvesting to really take off!

With no substantial precipitation last week, the asparagus harvest has slowed a bit, so we will have a limit of one bunch per customer to start the week. If we can up the limit later this week, we will. We are open for walk-up sales Tuesday - Saturday. See below for hours. Asparagus update! Walk-up and online store details for this week

The cool cloudy skies last week made for small asparagus harvest for our first week of picking, but the warmth and sun this week means much larger harvests! We will now be open both for self-serve walk-up sales and pre-ordering. Because of the high demand early in the asparagus season we will start the week with a 2 bunch limit per customer per online order, however we will remove that later in the week if supplies allow.
