Specialty tulips, seedlings, greens and more

April 29, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Carmella is harvesting Charming Beauty and the first Blue Spectacle of the season.

With warmer sunnier days our tulip field has been taking off, so we’ve got a larger selection this week. This warmer weather is also speeding up transitions elsewhere on the farm. We began turning over the greens in our high tunnels last week in order to make room for transplanting tomatoes this week. Peppers and cukes are soon to follow in our other tunnels. This means that kale mix will be the only high tunnel vegetable we will harvest this week, but we are keeping an eye on the asparagus field and hope to have an update next week!

We’ll have 2 pick-ups this week: Thursday, May 2nd 2pm - 6pm and Saturday May 4th 11am - 3pm (Happy Stars Wars Day!). Orders for both days will open tonight (Monday April 29th) at 6pm. If you are ordering for Thursday pick-up, the online store will close at 6am on the 2nd. If you are ordering for Saturday pick-up, those will close Friday at 6am.

In addition to online order pick-up, we will have additional seedlings out for walk-up sales this Saturday.

To place an online order visit:

https://openfoodnetwork.net/barrett-s-mill-farm/shop#/shop_panel

Available for order this week:

  • Kale mix

  • Green garlic

  • Fat Moon Mushroom: Maitake, Lion’s Mane, Farmer’s Mix and Shiitake. Orders for the mushrooms will close Wednesday at 6am to meet Fat Moon’s ordering deadline.

  • Seedlings: Fennel, Swiss Chard, Herbs (chives, cilantro, lemon balm, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme). It’s possible we’ll have some additional varieties available by Saturday.

  • Narcissus

  • Tulips (see below for the list of varieties)

Single type tulip varieties include:

  • Aafke: rose-colored single type

  • Avignon: raspberry-fuschia single type

  • Menton: apricot-pink single type

  • Yosemite: dark rose-pink single type

Double blooming tulip varieties include:

  • Amazing Grace: lavender-pink peony-type bloom

  • Blue Spectacle: violet-purple peony-type. Available later this week!

  • Charming Beauty: blush-apricot peony-type bloom

  • Creme Upstar: cream and blush colored peony-type bloom

  • Margarita: rose-magenta peony-type bloom

  • Orange Princess: orange peony-type bloom

  • Pep Talk: double type with pink, ivory and rose striations. Very limited.

  • Sunlover: golden yellow peony-type bloom with orange and red striations. Very limited.

Seedling sale, tulips and ordering update

April 22, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Heirloom Narcissus have started blooming!

While some of our greens are on the way out, this week we are excited to begin to offer tulips, narcissus and seedlings! We’ll have 2 pick-ups this week: Wednesday, April 24th 2pm - 6pm and Saturday April 27th 11am - 3pm. Orders for both days will open tonight (Monday April 22nd) at 6pm. If you are ordering for Wednesday pick-up, the online store will close at 6am on the 24th. If you are ordering for Saturday pick-up, those will close Friday at 6am. This will likely continue to be our online ordering schedule until we staff the farm stand in late May.

We will update inventory for Saturday sales as the week goes on, so if you don’t see something that you want at the beginning of the week, you can always check back later and we can add it to your existing order!

Greens, mushrooms, radishes, and green garlic available this week!

April 15, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Arugula growing in our high tunnel.

Orders will open at 6pm today (Monday) and will close Thursday morning at 8am for Thursday (April 18th) 3pm - 6pm pick-up. This week Fat Moon mushrooms return to our pre-order list and we are offering their Maitake mushrooms for the first time! Maitake mushrooms are also known as Hen of the Woods. They are native to New England but difficult to cultivate so these are a special treat! We will also be offering the popular Farmers’ Mix as well as a few varieties individually: Shiitake, Blue Oyster, and Comb Tooth. We have all of our early season high tunnel crops available this week including pea shoots, radishes, arugula, spinach, kale mix, and mizuna. Most of these early crops do not hold for long in the high tunnels during warm weather so because of the higher temperatures predicted this week this may be the last harvest for some items. See below for a full list of what is available for Thursday pick-up.

Thursday pick-up for high tunnel crops this week!

April 9, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Our high tunnels are bursting with early season crops! Orders will open at 6pm today (Tuesday) and will close Thursday morning at 8am for Thursday (April 11th) 3pm-6pm pick-up. This week pea shoots and arugula are ready to harvest as well as more radishes, baby kale mix, spinach and a small amount of mizuna. We will enjoy these high tunnel crops this month because by May we will need to clear out the high tunnels and prep to plant the important main season high tunnel crops: tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers! This week we also have green garlic available as well as honey from hives on the property and Baer’s Best Beans. We are running low on the organic black turtle beans right now but we will be getting a (bigger) delivery from Charley Baer soon. We also plan to add Fat Moon mushrooms back to our pre-order list next week!
