Farm Store opening this week for asparagus, strawberries and more!

May 27, 2024 Lise Holdorf

The crew flew through weeding carrots last week!

This week marks the beginning of staffing our farm store, which is usually a sign that we are starting to harvest a wider variety of crops (including a small amount of strawberries). A wider variety of crops also means that the CSA is starting soon - June 12th to be exact! CSA shares are still available, so if you haven’t yet signed up you can do so here. Because the CSA starts a little later this year, we are planning to offer a “Preview” week as an add-on, or as a chance to try it out if you haven’t done our CSA before. Stay tuned for more information later this week!

2024 Farm Store hours:

Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm
Saturday 9am-3pm

Cash, Credit, EBT, Check and Barrett’s Bucks accepted.

To place an online order for pick-up Thursday or Saturday visit:
https://openfoodnetwork.net/barrett-s-mill-farm/shop#/shop_panel

Orders for Thursday 2pm - 6pm pick-up close on Thursday morning at 6am. Orders for Saturday 11am - 3pm pick-up close on Friday morning at 6am.

Available this week:

  • Asparagus

  • Strawberries: Strawberries are very popular and during the first week especially we tend to sell out fast. We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while yields ramp up. We hope to give as many people as possible the chance to enjoy some fresh local strawberries, so for now we will limit it to 1 pint per household. We are making a small amount available for online pre-order to give those who are unable to make it earlier in the day a shot at getting some!

  • Snapdragon bouquets: High tunnel-grown Bridal Pink variety.

  • Bok choi

  • Mini daikon

  • Curly kale bunches: May be available at the end of the week. Not available for pre-order yet.

  • Baby Kale Mix: May be available at the end of the week. Not available for pre-order yet.

  • Swiss chard

  • Spinach

  • Herbs: Chives, Mint, Oregano, Sage

  • Fat Moon Mushrooms: Farmer’s Mix and Shiitake (limited quantities so may not be available by the end of the week)

  • Baer’s Best Beans - 1 pound bags. Grown in South Berwick, Maine. Black Turtle Beans are organic, but other varieties are not.

  • Double B Honey - From hives on the property. Not organic.

  • Seedlings: New this week we have hot peppers (jalapeño, Hungarian hot wax and cayenne) and Shishito peppers. We’ll also have cucumbers and husk cherries (currently for online pre-order only, but we may have some available for walk-ups at the end of the week). We are running low on tomatoes and some herb varieties, so this week may be your last chance for some of those.

Asparagus and greens, plus a final tulip sale

May 20, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Swiss chard, fennel and cucumbers in the high tunnel are looking great!

We’ve hit that time of the season when we all feel like triage nurses for plants. Our transplant schedule is backed up and we have to prioritize getting the most desperate looking seedlings into the ground first. Weeds are also taking off, and we’ve been skipping to the sections that will soon be subsumed if not given immediate attention (hoping to get back to the less weedy sections before they also begin to look perilous!). Luckily, we got a boost this past week from two additions to our crew - Luke and Maddie! We are prepared to transplant up a storm this week, but we may let the worst of the forecasted heat pass first and focus on weeding for the first half of the week!

Prepping beds for planting last week.

This week we are open for regular self-serve sales Tuesday thru Saturday! As always, payment can be made with Barrett’s Bucks, check or exact change. We are also trying out a new method to take credit card payment using your smartphone. We’ll have a QR code that will take you to a website where you can select your items and then complete your purchase. You will essentially be filling your own online order on the spot. If you would like to place an order that we will put together for you to pick-up later, please continue to use Open Food Network. We still recommend bringing cash or check as a back-up while we work out the kinks in our self-serve electronic payment system!

Mother's Day tulips, seedlings, and asparagus updates

May 6, 2024 Lise Holdorf

Sarah admires some of last week’s tulip haul.

We are excited to not only begin prepping tulip bouquets for Mother’s Day, but also to open our store for self-serve walk-up sales this Thursday! We’ll have plenty of seedlings for sale, along with the first asparagus of the season! Walk-up hours this week are Thursday/Friday 2pm - 6pm and Saturday 11am - 3pm. Since we are self-serve this time of year, we are working on a way to take credit card payments using your smartphone. However, if you are not a Barrett’s Bucks member please plan to bring exact change or a check while we are sorting this out. We are including prices below to help with your planning.

While we will have several items available for walk-up sales this week, if you want tulips for Mother’s Day, online orders are the only way to get them! We’ll have 3 pick-up options this week. For pick-ups on Thursday, May 9th 2pm - 6pm and Saturday, May 11th 11am - 3pm you’ll be able to order flowers, as well as items like mushrooms or asparagus. Pick-ups for Sunday, May 12th, 9am - noon are for tulips only (in case you don’t have a place to hide your Mother’s Day flowers!). If you would like to order other items like seedlings, mushrooms or asparagus, you must make a separate order to pick up Thursday or Saturday. Orders for all three days will open tonight (Monday, May 6th) at 6pm. If you are ordering for Thursday afternoon pick-up, the online store will close at 6am Thursday. If you are ordering for Saturday or Sunday pick-up, those will close Friday at 6am.
