We have been accomplishing a lot out in the field and in our high tunnels these past couple of weeks. We’ve been tractor cultivating all our peas, carrots, beets and leeks, as well as hand weeding and thinning our beets and carrots. Our classic summer crops of tomatoes, peppers and cukes are all planted and thriving inside our high tunnels. We’ve also planted more tomatoes out in the field, as well as two other classic summer crops - summer squash and zucchini. The to-do list is never-ending, but this week we’ll probably use some of the colder and rainier days as a chance to work in the greenhouse and start some trellising of high tunnel cucumbers and tomatoes in the high tunnels.
We’ll continue to plant many summer crops this week, and if you’re a home gardener, it’s still a great time to be planting as well! We moved through a lot of seedlings this past weekend, but we still have a nice variety available. We added summer squash, zucchini and cucumbers to the mix over the weekend, and this week we’ll be adding Pink Champagne cherry tomatoes as well. We’ve also got a new round of zinnias coming up! Check out our updated seedling descriptions for more info on these varieties.
This is the last week that our farm stand will be self-serve - starting next week the farm will be staffed! Just in time, as it looks like strawberry harvesting season is imminent. We may have some available for pre-order at the end of the week, but we’ll have to see how things play out with the weather. We will send out another email later this week if we have strawberries available for pre-order, so keep an eye out for that.
Finally, we’re so happy with the level of interest in the Boston Area Gleaners’ Procurement Fund. If you didn’t get a chance to read our email about their campaign to purchase produce from small farms like ours, you can find more information here. If you’re interested in contributing to their efforts to provide fresh local produce to schools and food pantries (all while supporting local farms!), you can donate here.
