We had some really pleasant weather for working most of last week. It was satisfying to cross off so many items from our to-do list at the end of the week, including lots of transplanting, greenhouse seeding, high tunnel trellising and weeding of our leeks and cabbage, and re-doing our raised herb beds. We’re bracing ourselves for some much hotter temperatures this week, which will impact what we’re able to get done. Some tasks, like high tunnel work, take a back seat in really hot weeks because however hot it is outside, its 10-20 degrees hotter in the high tunnel on a sunny day! Other tasks, like weeding, hoeing and tractor cultivating are well-suited to hot days, as weeds that are pulled up on a hot dry day tend to fry on our sandy soil (on wetter or cooler days they have a shot at re-rooting). We did use the relatively cooler temps Monday to prune high tunnel tomatoes, as we don’t know when it will next be comfortable enough to get back in there for any length of time!
